Module 4: Costing Educational Media and Technologies: Traditional Media
Reading how course developers use student learning hours (SLH) in determining the amount of reading to be expected in a DE course was great to know. A course of three US American credit points corresponds to 150 SLH. So course developers have to be conscious of the amount time (10 hours per week) for students to read, complete assignments, and communicate when designing a course.
In this module, I gravitated more to learning about Dr. Thalheimer’s (2002) comments about interactivity and memory retrieval was interesting. His statement that “interactivity prompts learners to retrieve information from memory, and it’s this retrieval practice that prompts the learning improvements” was valid. I concur with Tony Bates that you should mix the media. Everyone is not the same learner. I do better with visuals, which is probably why I’m pro media. I can read and read something, but seeing it is so much better for me.
